ANALYZING THE FAKE DMCA

Phil Cannella – First Senior Financial Group, has had a lot of bad press online. Financial services are prone to negative reviews and Phil Cannella is no different. However, whoever was in charge of this project seems to have tried a lot, and failed.

There were 3 fraudulent copyright notices that were filed between Oct 2015 – Jan 2016.

The first and second copyright notices were made to look as if were filed by ‘LifeHacker.com‘, alleging that several websites have stolen content from lifehacker.com, as well as monster.com , which is strange considering both websites belong to different companies. Why would two companies/websites own the same content, and file infringement complaints against randomly selected websites?

So we called up the editors and support at both websites and confirmed that they DID NOT file any DMCA report. In fact, Life Hacker and Monster.com has NEVER filed a single DMCA report on Google till date.

The final DMCA notice was a proper scam, and we were glad that at least these scammers are making an effort to try and convince Google that their copyright notice is legitimate.

For this, they set up a fake news portal – palastinetoday.com , copied the review originally published at pissedconsumer.com and backdated it to look like it was published on 22 June 2013.

However, a quick look at Domain Registrar History tells us that the domain was owned by Alauddin Ahmed ([email protected]) till 10 Sep 2015, after which it was transferred to our perpetrators.

Hosting history confirms that the website was set up on 10th Sep 2015 and was NOT ACTIVE before that. Which means that the article did not exist on palastimetoday.com in 2013

Here is how the website looked in March 2016. The website has been removed after our investigation into fake DMCA started.

Though the website was deleted and the review de-indexed at Google, we can still see traces of that planted review.

SO WHAT WERE THEY TRYING TO HIDE ?

Investment bankers, financial service guys, and firms have a lot to gain and lose from their reputation. One mistake can damage the reputation in the market beyond repair. Phil Cannella has had several bad reviews, and with the extent of his reputation management campaign, it looks like he has managed to fix most of his issues.

Some, like Pissedconsumer.com links, were too stubborn to be suppressed.

So he greenlit them !!

EDITOR’S COMMENT : For those who might ask – ‘why and how do we interject that ‘Phil Cannella – First Senior Financial Group’ has something to do with this fake DMCA. Couldn’t it be a coincidence ?’, we will say this – When someone goes and creates a whole new fake news site, falsifies his/her identity and submits fake DMCA to try and de-list some very targeted content on Google, it signals intent and a plan. It is obvious that ‘Phil Cannella – First Senior Financial Group’ or someone they hired was directly involved in this crime. Phil Cannella – First Senior Financial Group also cannot plead ignorance in this matter, since this notice on Google search is hard to miss, really.

We are awaiting more information from [email protected] regarding the identity of the new owner of palastinetoday.com domain name. We’ll update this page once we have more information. If you have any information to add to this investigation, get in touch with us at [email protected]
